About the Academy
The summer firefighter academy offered through the fire science program is a 10-week program that combines five weeks of online learning with a five-week paramilitary-style skills academy. Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn 12 credits towards your A.A.S. degree in fire science and will be eligible to test for Alaska Fire Fighter I certification. Academy Format & Delivery
The UAF CTC Summer Fire Academy is delivered in two parts. The first part is delivered through online instruction and the second part through in-person training. Students must successfully complete both parts to graduate from the academy.
- Online instruction begins June 1, 2023
Online instruction will focus on your development of fundamental knowledge and theory of fire behavior, fire organizations, types of fire equipment emergency response services possess and methods of their use. You will be required to complete all work associated with the online portion of the academy prior to attending in-person training. The online work is done on your own time with flexible due dates and times. All online assignments must be completed prior to July 5, 2023. - In-person training (Fairbanks) July 5 – August 18
In-person training will be a paramilitary-style skill academy that will provide you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills developed through your online training.

In addition to submitting your application to attend the Summer Fire Academy, we encourage you to apply for employment with any of the fire departments that UAF CTC works in cooperation with to provide real world experience to students while they earn their degree.
