The Associate in Arts in a Year (AAY) program at UAF CTC is an affordable, efficient, and customized pathway to earning your AA degree. With a maximum out-of-pocket cost of $2,000 per semester ($6,000 total) for eligible Alaska residents, it’s one of the most cost-effective options available. Completing an associates in one year enables attainment of a bachelor’s degree in three years, saving both time and money.

Classes in the AAY program are fully online and pre-selected and delivered through a cohort model. The program’s structure makes it possible for students from all walks of life to succeed, whether as continuing education or starting a new chapter. The AAY program is organized into nine sessions —one two-week and eight six-week sessions. Each six-week session consists of two classes and may include a one-credit course designed to complement the two general education courses.

Graduates who transition to a bachelor’s program after completing the A.A. will have a well-rounded foundation for continuing their education and preparing for a successful work life.

Apart from preparing you for a career through the bachelor’s degree, the associate degree opens many doors all by itself. The A.A. degree program is ideal for students who are undecided about a major. The program allows students to explore a wide range of topics which can help them discover their greatest area of interest. The Associate of Arts is an especially exciting degree choice because it can be customized to meet specific needs. The degree is also flexible; if academic or career goals change, the student’s academic plan can adapt to meet those changes and achieve their education and career goals.

Because the A.A. degree is so flexible and can be used to meet so many educational and career goals, it is essential that you work with an academic advisor while completing your degree. Your academic advisor will work with you to ensure your individual goals are met. If you plan to go on to a bachelor’s degree, your advisor will also provide guidance on any general education courses needed beyond the A.A. degree, as well as courses designated within bachelor’s degree majors and minors.

To receive discounted tuition, applicants to the AAY program must Alaska residents, Pell-eligible and will be required to apply for financial aid. Aid and scholarships will be applied first, with a max out-of-pocket cost of $2,000 per semester.
